Life Changer, Obstacle Buster

By Walter L. Hilliard III

Let’s Go!

Think of something important that you want, something you would love to have Right Now?

What’s the biggest obstacle stopping you, keeping you from having it?

(Big Goals=BIG Inspiration)?

What one thing can you do right now to take One Step towards that goal?

Are you ready?

No? No one’s coming to save you. It’s time you save yourself.

And here’s a piece of MAGIC I want you to take with you on your journey, something you can use the rest of your life: “The one thing in life that’s free and can never be taken away from you and help you achieve anything you want to achieve is: PERSISTENCE!

You fall. You fail. You get back up . . . AND GO FORWARD UNTIL YOU GET WHAT YOU WANT!

And don’t complain, ACT! I said, Don’t Complain, Act!

Let’s Go!!!!

Now You Know Why You’re Not Living The Life Of Your Dreams

By Walter L. Hilliard III

So the 9-5 gig, a decent relationship, and the fact that you’re not in jail is all you want out of life?

Have you ever wondered why medocrity is so prevalent and most people disparage or discourage others they see trying to do better, be better, or simply even trying to inspire others?

It’s because we don’t believe in ourselves, victims of our past and what we have and haven’t done. Most of us are caught in the “Matrix of the past”: We get up about the same time every morning, get out of bed the same way, drink the same coffee, drive to work the same way, and work the same job because we believe we couldn’t, wouldn’t survive without it.

The problem is most of us don’t believe in ourselves, and we don’t think we deserve any better, so what we’re really saying is the ultimate truth behind the Matrix Door is we feel safe when we are deluding ourselves, not having to face the disappointment of failing. You see, most of us ae very sensitive when it comes to not meeting our own desires or expectations.

The primary way to overcome the aforementioned “Matrix” delusion is to develop the habit of frequently looking into your own eyes in the mirror and having a powerful conversation with yourself, staring at yourself with no place to hide, asking yourself big questions.

These big questios need to focus on where you’re at? Why you don’t have what you want yet? And/or are you simplay afraid to fail, are you finding or making excuses to quit on yourself?

In fact, you would be amazed how many people tell me in individual and group sessions that they haven’t or rarely look into a mirror, looking themselves in the eyes, and challenge themselves.

So will you go and have this conversation, looking into your own eyes in the mirrior — right now!!!???

The Mirror Never Lies, Or Does It?

By Walter L. Hilliard III

The mirror is as real as it gets, but what you usually see is based on what you believe. And therein lies the problem — your Mistaken Certainties.

Your Mistaken Certainties are the beliefs you are certain of, but these beliefs may actually be mistakes; thus, you will suffer because you are trying to live a life based on a lie — and lies catch up with you, causing frustration and anxiety when you keep trying but never seem to get what you want.

If you go back to the Man/Woman in the Mirror and take an honest look at yourself, what you believe, you have to really look deep into your own eyes and ask yourself the following questions to learn the truth and be able to identify your Mistaken Certainties and change your own mind:

Ask your SELF:

  1. What do I want most that I can’t ever seem to get?
  2. Is the thing I want good for me or not?
  3. Everyone has a desire, but not everyone is willing to do what it takes to get what they want; thus, am I willing to do what it takes to get what I want?
  4. Am I willing to persist until I get what I want?
  5. And lastly, am I willing to start now (because tomorrow may never come)?
  6. ….Did you start yet????
  7. Well……..?

See Yourself As Who You Can Be, Not Who You Think You Are

By Walter L. Hilliard III, Your Black Therapist Coach

When I was young, I wanted to be an NBA basketball player, following in the footsteps of the stereotypes of all Black boys wanting to be athletes or entertainers. But as I grew older, I wanted to simply go to work in a tie like my stepfather and be cool like my father.

Eventually, I became my own man and developed a social consciousness, studying Malcolm X in college, gaining an understanding that all people are in this together and the enemy is our exploitive version of capitalism and democracy, as well as the Power Elite who control our world.

I have spent my life writing and inspiring people to be the best they can be.

And so I would graciously recommend the same to you; don’t get caught up in who you think you are and your failures. Focus on your successes and understand that the number one tool you can use to get what you want and become who you want to be is PERSISTENCE. Why? Because it enables you to get up after learning something and get up from your falls or failures — and try again or try something different UNTIL YOU GET WHAT YOU WANT!

When you fall or fail, smile, reassess, VISUALIZE the YOU you want to be, practice it, SPEAK or AFFIRM IT OUT LOUD, PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH, and FOCUS on ACTION; don’t sit around worrying and rehearsing the negative aspects of your failures.

Also, create inspiration by moving your body and motivating your mind (changing your thoughts) when you find yourself becoming discouraged: Listen to inspirational music. Watch a motivational video. Get up and move, run, exercise, go somewhere. Give yourself a Pep Talk or listen to something or someone that will inspire you. And when you talk to yourself, practice FEELING the emotion “in the moment,” this is very, very important and takes practice, practice, practice. Then repeat all of the steps I just mentioned; this process will enable you to build momentum and take you where you want to go . . . one step at a time.

You Are That Which You Want to Be so “Embrace You” and laugh when your enemies or negativity tries to shame you or stop you. “Crabs in a barrel” want to drag you down to where they are so they don’t feel bad about not having the courage you have to change.

No Purpose, Well, You Might As Well Be Lost In The Sahara Desert

By Walter L. Hilliard III

How strange is it that so many of us live from day to day, waiting for something to happen — a lottery win, a new love, or even something similar to the fantastical tales we watch on Netflix? Yeah, your plane goes down, you wake up on an abandoned island beach, happen to find a boat, get lost at sea, you’re close to death, you wake up again, and the guys from a Carnival cruise ship are standing over you, waiting for you wake up . . . ?

By Walter L. Hilliard III How strange is it that so many of us live from day to day, waiting for something to happen — a lottery win, a new love, or even something similar to the fantastical tales we watch on Netflix? Yeah, your plane goes down, you wake up on an abandoned island…

Okay, I’ll stop.

But doesn’t it seem like most of us are actually waiting for something magical to happen to us?

The reality is most of us are living the dream of apathy, eternal hope, and have settled for a life of mediocrity. And the only thing worse than this is realizing that not only is it true, but we’re too ashamed of ourselves to admit it.

So let me share something with you . . . there’s no one coming to save you . . . you have to MOTIVATE yourself. And what I have discovered is “The Moment” is the Key; you have to raise your awareness — or your ability to understand everything that affects your life.

What’s The Moment?

The Moment is always with us and it’s always “as good as it gets,” it’s life and it’s always the best opportunity to change your life (yesterday just a memory, and tomorrow a dream), starting with the question: “What one thing can I do right now that can change my life forever?”

Think . . . about . . . it.

Then realize that if you’re here, right now, in the moment, and you can do or be anything. Sounds like something you have heard before, right? But have you realized that if you’re still hoping for “magic” to happen — then consider that the only magic life really provides us with is acknowledging the moment and making what we want to happen — happen now . . . and then embrace the next moment and do what you have to do, taking yet another step, and then another, starting and walking the Thousand Mile Journey that begins with your first step . . . then ride the momentum your building . . . move your body, read something inspirational, but not for more than 10 to 15 minutes . . . then get back on that horse . . . work on your dreams some more . . . watch an inspirational video for an emotional/motivational boost, and so on. I do it all the time, especially when I find myself procrastinating or realize I haven’t been working on or towards my dreams. And when I really struggle getting back on that horse, I Jump Start myself with a 5-minute drill, doing all I can, rapidly, in pursuit of my dreams for at least five minutes, using a timer set to go off to start and stop. Do five minutes; then, if you would like to, reset the clock and do another five minutes, building momentum. And what usually happens is I just keep going after the first five-minute drill until I’m satisfied.

It’s all about work, but purposeful, fun work (but then . . . is it really work . . . or fun . . . hmmm?); HE is how we become inspired and learn to appreciate the pursuit of our dreams. In fact, we spend more time pursuing the dream than actually achieving the dream; thus, this is really where the magic in live lives, not really the goal or end result because we’ll just probably just keep coming up with goals so we’ll end up always chasing something if we don’t enjoy the process. We have to do the self-analysis and discovery that helps us Get On Purpose and live a fulfilled life.

But let’s take this a step further, let’s talk about something even more specific — purpose. You see, when you’re living “on purpose,” you’re less likely to feel bored, inadequate, feeling like a failure, or otherwise.

Purpose is a life-long pursuit that often changes, and that’s okay. Purpose should ask two simple questions: Who am I? and Why am I here (or why am I living)? Your purpose should also help others or make the world a better place. For example, maybe you want to be a doctor, teacher, or accountant to help others.

Still don’t know your purpose?

What turns you on? What are your talents, your skills? What do you do better than most other people? My purpose summarized — the short version: “I am a happy, loving, inspired man, a Black man, and a loving father, son, and uncle who is committed to making the world a better place through my writings on inspiration and race.

If you can figure out your purpose, you will have half the Life Battle beat.

And it’s okay to go through the ups and downs of life — just don’t panic when you’re down; things always get better. It sounds logical, but we know from the thousands of cases of suicide around the world, it’s not.

I’ve also come to realize that no one lives life at the top all the time — emotionally, mentally, physically, financially, socially, spiritually, at least based on my definition.

It’s true that “Death is the price we pay to live.”

So for me, purpose and happiness work hand-in-hand and life is a series of waves that go up and down; thus, the trick is to survive the bad times, shorten their length, and create the passion or energy you need to prosper by reminding yourself of your purpose, capturing every moment by challenging yourself. And when you do fall and find yourself waddling around in self-pity, get up off your knees and rise to the occasion — to be the best you and realize that there’s never been, nor will there ever be, anyone like you to ever walk the face of this earth again.

You are truly unique!

So, again, what’s your purpose?

Ground Zero For Changing Your Life Instantly!

By Walter L. Hilliard

We have a planet full of Winners who think and act like Losers.

Let that sink in for a moment . . . how do you think, feel, and act like a loser?  What does it look like?  You wake up and rehearse your worries or problems?  You voice your complaints?  You carryout the same routine every morning?  You go to the same job, listen to the same people, and go home to the same house everyday?  You believe your dreams are a fantasy, and that’s exactly what they become.

Yes, we really do HAVE A PLANET FULL OF WINNERS WHO ACT LIKE LOSER!  It’s true so don’t let it be you.

Let’s cut right to the chase — no “fluff ‘n stuff”: change can happen instantly when you do something different so the real challenge is to maintain positive change and move on to the next desire.

The only thing stopping you from creating the life that you dream of is your negative, past programming: the tens of thousands of thoughts you think a day are rooted in your past limitations, or a mind that repetitively thinks of the past and a body and soul that feels your limitations like a pain in your stomach.  You have to reprogram yourself to change yourself.  And reprogramming comes about by doing things differently: visualize the best you; talk about the new you enthusiastically (self-talk; and look into the mirror), repeatedly, to the extent that you feel your change happening deep down in your bones; start reading inspirational articles and books everyday; cut your time down with negative people; journal about your fears and how to overcome them; and watch videos on inspiration and motivation.  If you can become consumed with watching your favorite TV shows, partying, or allowing yourself life to be controlled by boring routines — you can also turn on the Light Switch, get up off of your knees, crawling around, led by negativity like an old dog on a leash, Paint a New Moment, Creating A New Future!

Trying is an excuse for not doing.

A short story:

I remember I wanted the management job at a company, despite my having no serious management experience, at least formal experience.  But I gave myself credit for being a leader, creating programs from scratch, and accomplishing things all my life, just because I jumped in and learned to swim.

So that’s what I did, I knew I had more experience with the company than anyone they could bring in from the outside and no one currently at the company had done more than I had so I declared the position was mine — to myself and I acted like it; I was consumed and almost dared the company to hire someone else.  I knew I could manage 14 employees and the cases of 130 clients because I could do anything (at least that’s what my mamma always told me).

As days and weeks passed and I hadn’t heard back from the director, who was the decision-maker regarding who would be hired, I decided to walk into her office an ask her.  She kept typing as she responded, peaked up at me, smiled and said I had the job.

Great!

But why hadn’t she told me?  Probably because she kind of, maybe didn’t want to hire me because, well, let’s just say there were no other Black managers at this level in the company and I was the first minority being hired for such a big position.

However, this didn’t matter to me and I believe my confidence in that very moment helped her make up her mind.  Well, I went on to do some great things, creating a couple of award-winning programs and serving more and more clients than we would have otherwise served.

The point is, be assertive, be bold — but base your high expectations on hard work, being open to learning, and being creative.  Don’t ever doubt yourself or at least allow doubt to change your behavior.  We all think negative thoughts but a thought cannot stop your when you’re determined and are open to figuring out what you don’t know by learning to depend on persistence and knowing that there’s nothing that you cannot accomplish.

Pep Talk: Let’s Talk

By Walter L. Hilliard

Sure you can.  I know that you can because you’re here, on earth.  You’ve made it to this point, and I believe in you.  I know that you have what it takes.  There have been many before you and after you, but never anyone quite like you.  I suggest you stake your claim on this planet and do something with your life.  Wouldn’t you agree?  It would be a travesty if you were to leave this world and the lives that you’ve come into contact with the same.  Everyone has a sphere of influence and the lives you touch will touch others.  There is greatness in you – even if you refuse to acknowledge it.  And you know what, I know that you at least suspect that you can do great things.  I know that you’ve had moments of inspiration that signaled to you that you could do whatever you set your mind to.  Sure, there will be critics, there will be those that laugh at you, but wouldn’t you like to prove them wrong?  Wouldn’t you like to show the people that have doubted you all along that you could make something of yourself?  Wouldn’t you like to get the last laugh?  Can you imagine the look on their faces when they see that you’ve risen above their death sentence?  Of course you would.  Others can make it tougher for you to succeed, especially if you need something from them, but they cannot decide your fate.  What resides within you is greater than anything or anyone that could ever hope to stop you.  If a door closes in your face, go under it, over it, or around it.  And if that doesn’t work, knock it down, or pound on it until you leave this earth.  Let them carry you away.  Others might say you’re crazy, but they’ll have to respect you because you never backed down or gave up.  And with each door that you get through, you’ll learn something new about yourself, as well as what it will take to knock down the next door.  If life were too easy, it would be quite boring and you would never appreciate hard work.  There’s only one way to succeed, and that’s’ to do whatever it takes and do it for yourself because you deserve the best.  You will find a way.  I promise you.  All you have to do is decide on what you want and go get it.

Preparation & Responsibility

By Walter L. Hilliard

Many years ago, I sat in a college classroom at Kutztown University enjoying my exchanges with a “hippie throwback” professor who had fallen and was unable to climb out of the long gone ‘60s.   But his brilliance taught me a thing or two and laid titles on my views about a corporate-run American society struggling to stay on track on a runaway train driven by Wall Street and ignored by politicians.  And here we are today still licking our wounds after that train crash.

Yes, during and after college I was afraid, very afraid.  So I decided I’d had enough of self-important politicians speechifying about voting for them and decided that I’d go out into the Community and “do” what we vote for politicians to do for us.  Many moons and successful grassroots programs later, I still have little desire to talk with politicians.  I mean, have you ever talked to a politician (they’re all the same) and then have them give you that look, like, “Uhhh, I’m sorry, what’d ya say, I wasn’t listening?”

My Life Response:  “Uhhhm, sorry, I was simply asking you to get your ‘career’ out of my way so I can continue working.  Thank you.”

Activism and real grassroots programming is what’s missing in America.  And Barack Obama is viewed as Rock Star and a Messiah because too many of us have been “dressing in the dark,” waiting for someone to open up our minds and shine their light onto aspirations we don’t believe we can act on.

The thing about excuses: if you have them, you’ll use them.  Community and personal responsibility will always be our only saviors. Barack is not going to save us.

We all loved Michael Jackson for his talent and charity work, but he refused to grow up and take on his responsibility to be a man, always blaming his father, Joe Jackson, for his abhorrent behavior and unhappiness.  Swim around in your sorrows and life makes you pay.

Bottom line: after high school, you can start a family, fight in a war, or do anything you want to do so stop blaming your parents for your shortcomings.

Many of us are hiding our greatness in church pews and behind mates, but we will always be the leaders we are looking for.

Will Smith, a multi-billion dollar entertainer and businessman, said:  “If you stay ready you ain’t got to git ready.” Does Will know what he’s talking about?  Well, eleven or so of his movies have earned over $300 million, EACH, and every rap album he’s made has gone gold (500,000 sold) or platinum (one million sold).  And to think of all the rappers who had laughed at Will and said his rapping style was corny.  Ha-ha – I’d tell you their names, but . . . I can’t remember them?

Anyway, we should admire Will more for his community service projects, such as the New Village Academy he started in Calabasas, California, giving students with limited opportunities a chance to succeed in life.

Big Willie, or so he calls himself, said that what separates him from others is that he will not be outworked by anyone. “If we were both on treadmills,” said Will, “you’ll fall and give up before I will, or I will die on the treadmill.  While the other guy is sleeping, I’m working.”

What could you accomplish if your work ethic matched Will’s?

You Can Run from Your Greatness, but you Cannot Hide from Your “Self.”

There will never be anyone like you – your work can never be duplicated.   And don’t let fear, a self-fulfilling prophecy, hold you back.

What if Martin Luther King had ignored his desire to change America and said, “Nahhh, it’s too dangerous, I’ll just play it safe and chill in my church?”  Thus, there would be no Barack Obama.

And Dr. King didn’t have two brains. Would Martin accept your excuses?  I know your mama and friends are tired of hearing your excuses:  “But mama . . . .”

Are your dreams going to join the millions buried in the graveyard?

How do you awaken:  “Good morning, Lord!” or “Good Lord, it’s morning!”

And don’t let the unhappy people “gift you” their miserable reality.  Misery doesn’t just love company, it wants to move in.

Your Reputation Is Based On Your Preparation.

The harder you work, the luckier you get.

I remember – after agreeing to do a presentation for a few teachers – pulling up to the high school and asking my friend if there was a basketball game that night because of all the cars.  Needless to say, I discovered I was the only game going on that night when I walked into an auditorium filled with every teacher in the school.

I paused to smile at my friend, with revenge in my eyes, turned to the crowd, and gave one of my best presentations, ever.  I was prepared.

Talk Isn’t Cheap, It’s Free.

Talking too much is like Novocain, it numbs your sense of urgency to take the action your subconscious mind needs to help you develop the habits that will make you successful.  If talking alone made success a reality we’d all have everything we wanted.  “Don’t talk about it, be about it.” Waiting is a trap:  “One day I’m gonna . . . .”

“. . . You gonna, what – die?  Well, you got that right.”

Ouch!

When you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail, and our world is the lesser for it.
